Do you know what the kids are doing tonight?

As a councillor you have parental responsibilities beyond your own children. According to the DfES some 93,000 children who need to leave their home are looked after by local councils.

The whole council, and you as a councillor, has a responsibility for those young people. It makes you a Corporate Parent. You are expected to “seek for them the same outcomes any good parent would want for their own children.” DfES, October 2003. (http://www.dfes.gov.uk/qualityprotects/pdfs/childsumm.pdf)

How well do you, or more particularly your fellow councillors, know these children?
LifeSwap is a powerful and innovative way of letting young people tell councillors about their lives. By using mobile phone cameras they share their life experiences as they happen over a single ordinary day. Councillors also join in. The pictures are sent to www.cllrlifeswap.org.uk along with captions that describe the importance of the photo.

PS. The picture above was taken during Norfolk Life Swap. The photographer DannyBoy had this to say:

“sittin with young lad throughout his tagging period and giving him guidance with his daily problems he has adhd and is often misunderstood by people but overall he is a smart lad who just needs a bit of guidance on how to deal with his emotions he has also learnt a hard lesson as he has none of his so called previous friends keeping him company, he is also misunderstood because of his size being a big lad people tend to think he is an adult and expect him to behave like one too 10pm”
